Orthodontics

Does orthodontic treatment change your face shape or make your cheeks look hollow?

Some facial change during orthodontic treatment is possible. 1) If protrusion is improved with extraction-based treatment, the mouth area draws back and the impression of your jawline can change. 2) Hollow cheeks usually happen because eating is uncomfortable during treatment, so you chew less and the chewing muscles temporarily weaken; this mostly recovers once eating becomes comfortable again. 3) However, skeletal issues such as jaw asymmetry or an underbite are not changed by moving teeth alone. We explain what changes to expect while reviewing your records at the orthodontic diagnosis.
