Why is alveolar ridge preservation (bone grafting after extraction) performed?

Alveolar ridge preservation is performed after extraction to reduce shrinkage of the gum and jawbone and preserve a favorable shape for a future implant or restoration. Bone graft material is placed in the socket, and at Seoul Maeil Dental Hospital, PRF made from the patient’s own blood may be added when appropriate to support healing. However, it cannot prevent all bone loss, and the need for it depends on ① infection, ② the remaining socket walls, and ③ the treatment plan. We decide after an examination and CT review before extraction.
