How long does a resin filling last?

A resin filling usually lasts about 3 to 5 years, and 10 years or more with good care, depending on how you look after it and on your chewing forces. It is not a permanent material, so knowing when to replace it matters. If 1) the edges become discolored or stained, 2) part of it chips or wears down, or 3) food starts catching at that spot, a secondary cavity may have formed in the gap, and replacement is needed if an examination confirms decay. Have the condition of your resin fillings checked at your regular check-ups.
