Why does food get caught so easily around my implant?

Food catching around an implant comes from structural differences from a natural tooth. Food that collects in the space between the teeth or on the outer side of the implant crown should be cleaned after meals with an interdental brush, floss, or a water flosser. However, if food is forced into a narrow gap between the teeth and does not come out easily, the design of the crown may need to be modified, so a dental examination is needed. Unlike natural teeth, which drift over time, an implant is fixed, so the side of the implant can lose contact with the neighboring tooth; in that case modifying the implant crown reduces food impaction.
