Yes, baby teeth do receive root canal treatment. A baby tooth also has a nerve (pulp) inside, so deep decay causes pain and inflammation, and if left alone it can damage even the permanent tooth bud developing below. Because a baby tooth holds the space for the permanent tooth, the principle is to preserve it until it is naturally replaced. However, if inflammation has spread badly beyond the root or the decay is too extensive for root canal treatment, extraction followed by a space maintainer may be considered. If the permanent tooth is due to erupt soon, we may also simply wait after extraction without a space maintainer.
