When should my child first visit the dentist?
The first dental visit is best around 6 months of age, when the first baby tooth appears, and no later than the first birthday. At that visit we can assess cavity risk, review feeding and weaning habits, and plan fluoride care. After that we recommend 1) a check-up every 3 to 6 months even with no symptoms, 2) a full assessment around ages 2 to 3, when all the baby teeth are in, and 3) an immediate visit regardless of the interval if a tooth turns dark or your child is in pain.
