What is a dry socket after an extraction, and what are the symptoms?

A dry socket is when the blood clot protecting the extraction site is dislodged or dissolves, leaving the bone exposed and inflamed. It typically begins 3 to 5 days after the extraction with 1) severe throbbing pain that painkillers barely control, 2) pain radiating to the ear and temple, and 3) bad breath and an unpleasant odor. To prevent it, avoid straws, smoking, and vigorous rinsing for 2 to 3 days after the extraction. If you suspect a dry socket, do not endure it - come in and we can reduce the pain with cleaning and a medicated dressing.
