Denture
I gag whenever I put my denture in and cannot wear it. Is there anything I can do?
There are ways to manage it, so please do not give up. Gagging usually happens when the back border of the denture is too long or the palate section too thick, irritating the soft palate or the base of the tongue, and it often improves once the length and thickness are trimmed at the clinic. Helpful tips for adapting are to 1) wear it for short periods at first and build up, 2) swallow saliva as if holding a candy in your mouth while breathing slowly through your nose, and 3) put it in before meals so you get used to it. However, if the gagging is unchanged after 2 to 4 weeks, we can consider redesigning it to cover less of the palate, so come in for a consultation.
