Denture
Since getting dentures my speech is slurred and I lisp. When will it get better?
Slurred speech in the early days with a denture usually improves within 2 to 4 weeks as you adapt. The thickness of the denture covering the palate changes where your tongue makes contact, which is why sounds such as s, j, and ch slip, and it resolves once your tongue learns the new positions. To adapt faster, 1) read a newspaper or book aloud slowly every day, 2) practice difficult words repeatedly, and 3) reduce the time you spend with the denture out so you get enough wearing time. However, if your speech is unchanged after 1 to 2 months, or the denture shifts when you talk, it needs adjustment, so please come in.
