Esthetic/Whitening
My canine is too pointed and I would like it filed down. Will it make the tooth very sensitive?
Enamel shaping - lightly reducing a tooth within the enamel, the hard outer layer - can be done without anesthesia and rarely causes sensitivity. Enamel contains no nerves, so a fine adjustment of about 0.5 mm or less does not cause pain. However, 1) if a large amount has to be removed, or 2) if wear has already exposed the dentin beneath, filing can cause sensitivity, and an additive approach such as resin or a laminate may suit you better. We will check the condition of your tooth at your visit and tell you what is possible.
