Wisdom Tooth
When does the bone fill in after a wisdom tooth extraction?
The gum surface over the extraction site usually closes in about a month, while the bone underneath takes about 3 to 6 months to fill in completely and harden. The blood clot formed right after the extraction gradually turns into bone, so in the early days you must avoid anything that dislodges the clot, such as using a straw or smoking. However, if pain actually worsens 3 to 5 days after the extraction, the clot may have been lost and it could be a dry socket, so please come in.
