I have acid reflux. Can it dissolve my teeth?
Yes, repeated exposure to stomach acid can cause dental erosion. Stomach acid is acidic enough to dissolve enamel, so with frequent reflux the chewing surfaces of the molars and the inner surfaces of the front teeth are usually hollowed out first and become sensitive. To manage it, 1) do not brush right after reflux - rinse with water or mouthwash only, 2) brush after at least 30 minutes, and 3) have the reflux itself treated in internal medicine. If teeth are already hollowed or sensitive, we recommend an examination to see how far it has progressed.
