Is botulinum toxin treatment for the jaw safe?
Botulinum toxin in the jaw (chewing) muscles is a relatively safe treatment when given at an appropriate dose at a dental clinic. It is used to reduce excessive force in the jaw muscles, easing grinding, clenching, and jaw pain, and the effect usually lasts 3 to 6 months, with repeat injections as needed. Your bite may feel weaker for 1 to 2 weeks right after the injection, but most people adapt. However, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have a neuromuscular condition, the treatment may not be suitable, so please tell us at your consultation.
