Do I have to take antibiotics during root canal treatment?
Antibiotics are not needed for every root canal treatment. They are prescribed only in cases such as infection spreading beyond the root into the surrounding tissue, facial swelling or fever, or a collection of pus. If you have been prescribed them, it is important to finish the full course even once your symptoms improve. Stopping on your own can let the infection return or allow resistant bacteria to develop. However, if side effects such as a rash or diarrhea appear while you are taking them, stop and let the clinic know.
