Is there a way to check myself for oral cancer at home?
Yes - about once a month, look in a mirror in good light and check the following. 1) Put your tongue out and look at its top, sides, and underside. 2) Turn your lips and the inside of your cheeks outward to look, and feel them with a finger. 3) Check the palate and gums for changes in color. 4) Feel under your jaw and along your neck for lumps. Warning signs are an ulcer that has not healed in 2 weeks, a white or red patch that does not wipe away, a lump that keeps growing, and persistent altered sensation on one side. Self-examination is only a guide; if you find an area of concern, it is more reliable to have it checked at the dental clinic.
