Periodontal
Can periodontal disease be cured completely?
Periodontal (gum) disease is closer to a condition you manage continuously, like diabetes. Treatment can stop the inflammation and halt its progression, but bone that has already dissolved does not return to its original state on its own. Treatment by stage is 1) early (gingivitis) - healthy gums can be restored with scaling and improved brushing alone, 2) moderate - periodontal treatment to remove tartar deep under the gums, and 3) advanced - gum surgery or bone grafting is considered. Even after treatment, the key to preventing recurrence is a check-up and scaling every 3 to 6 months.
