What is the difference between a hot compress and a cold compress?

Cold and hot compresses differ in when and why they are used. 1) Cold compress: from immediately after an extraction or surgery through the first 48 hours (2 days), it constricts blood vessels to limit bleeding and swelling. Wrap it in a towel and apply intermittently for 15 to 20 minutes at a time. 2) Hot compress: from day 3, it improves circulation and helps clear bruising and any remaining swelling. If you reverse the order and apply heat right after surgery, the swelling can get worse, so please be careful. However, if swelling and pain keep worsening after 3 days or you develop a fever, inflammation is possible, so come in.
