After a wisdom tooth extraction, 1) bite firmly on the gauze for about 2 hours to stop the bleeding, 2) swallow saliva and blood rather than spitting, and 3) do not use a straw. Suction can dislodge the blood clot and cause a very painful dry socket. 4) Avoid alcohol and smoking for at least a week. Pain is usually manageable with painkillers for 2 to 3 days, but pain that worsens 3 to 5 days after the extraction is a sign of infection, so please come in.
