TMJ

How is TMJ disorder treated?

TMJ treatment proceeds in stages, starting with conservative care. 1) Lifestyle correction and self-care (warm compresses, soft foods), 2) medication (anti-inflammatory painkillers, muscle relaxants), 3) physical therapy, 4) a splint (occlusal stabilization appliance) — worn mainly during sleep to reduce the load on the joint and muscles, and 5) Botox injections — for severe clenching or high tension in the chewing muscles. Most cases improve with conservative treatment without surgery, and the appropriate stage is decided after diagnosis based on your symptoms and their cause.
