TMJ
My jaw feels stiff when I wake up. Why?
Teeth grinding or clenching during sleep is the most common cause. While you sleep, strong forces are unconsciously and continuously applied to your jaw muscles and joints, leaving you with stiffness in the morning. If the symptoms recur for more than 2 weeks or come with headaches or tooth sensitivity, we recommend an examination. If grinding is confirmed, a night-time appliance can protect your teeth and joints while you sleep. However, if you also find it hard to open your mouth in the morning, please come in promptly.
