If your gums are weak, are you less likely to get cavities?
No. If your gums become weak due to periodontal disease, you may be more likely to develop cavities. Epidemiological studies report that patients with periodontitis have about a 1.5-fold higher risk of developing cavities, and more than a twofold increase in root cavities. This is because ① gum recession exposes the vulnerable root surfaces of the teeth, ② food debris and plaque accumulate in the widened spaces between the teeth, and ③ pain and bleeding may make it difficult to brush sufficiently. However, because the level of risk differs from person to person, if you have gum bleeding or recession, you should have it checked through an examination.
