How is gum treatment performed?

Gum (periodontal) treatment is typically done in stages. 1) First, we use scaling to remove the tartar above the gum line. 2) Then, after local anesthesia, we use instruments to remove the deeper tartar below the gum line and the inflamed tissue (a procedure called root planing / subgingival curettage). The mouth is usually divided into several sections, treated 1-2 weeks apart. If the inflammation is deep, gum surgery to open the gum and remove the tartar may also be needed. After treatment, regular maintenance every 3 to 6 months is important to prevent recurrence.
