Scaling

Can children also get scaling?

Yes, children can have scaling if tartar has formed. In children, tartar tends to form in limited spots such as the inner surface of the lower front teeth, so rather than a full-mouth scaling as with adults, we gently remove it from just those areas. Left in place, tartar causes gum inflammation and bad breath, so it is better to remove it even at a young age. However, if tartar keeps building up quickly, there may be a problem with brushing habits, so we recommend age-appropriate brushing instruction at the same visit.
