Is tongue-tie surgery very painful? Is it done under anesthesia?

The pain burden is relatively small. It is usually done with a laser or surgical scissors after local anesthesia, and the procedure takes about 5 to 10 minutes. After the anesthesia wears off there may be stinging and discomfort when moving the tongue for a few days, but for most people prescribed painkillers control it, and the wound heals within 1 to 2 weeks. For young children who find it hard to cooperate, nitrous oxide sedation may be used as well. However, if bleeding does not stop or fever or severe swelling develops, come in right away.
